The Primetime Emmys are about to be given out for the 68th time, and award shows have turned into as much a fashion show as an acknowledgement of all of acting’s finest. Beautiful men and women parade down the red carpet in suits and gowns tailored to a T. But since we are an automotive news blog, we are more interested in HOW they get to the red carpet in the first place? Which “carriage” bears these modern-day royals to the ball?

Well, for the sixth year now, Audi has been a sponsor of the Emmys. The official vehicle for the Award this year – the 2017 Audi R8. The all-new 2017 R8 is Audi’s most powerful production model to date. It does, after all, share plenty of similarities to the R8 LMS racecar and Audi describes it as “50% race car”.

Under the hood is a naturally-aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine that generates up to 610hp and 413lb-ft of torque. That’s good for when you want to ditch the paparazzi, because the R8 can hit 60mph in just 3.2 seconds, and a top speed of 205mph. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and carbon ceramic brakes allow excellent rev-matching downshifts and stopping power.

The 2017 model was launched back in August and it remains firmly the dream car that appears in the lusty dreams of car lovers. With a price tag of close to US$163,000, some dreams are meant to remain just that.

Other Audi vehicles will be used to chauffeur VIPs to the Microsoft Theater where this year’s Emmys will be held, including the Audi Q7. If you have seen how voluminous (read: ridiculously cumbersome) some of the dresses worn to nights such as this are, you’d understand why they need a seven-seater to transport an actress and her skinny behind to the show.
