Many car manufacturers today use Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) in mainstream cars. It started with the Audi TT, Volkswagen Golf MK4 R and Bugatti Veyron back in the early 2000s. Since then, the PowerShift, EDC, DSG, PDK, M-DCT and TCT are some of the DCT's introduced to the market. Even award winners 2014 Supercar of the Year, Lamborghini Huracan, and 2016 Ferrari 488GTB use a 7-speed dual clutch.

Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)

“What if we took a manual gearbox and gave it two clutches?" a question first asked by Porsche. They developed it for their famous racing prototypes and eventually came out with the Doppelkupplung aka PDK for the 956/962 endurance racecars in the 1980s. Until 2009, the 911 Carrera and Boxster/Cayman were road cars that used the PDK.

When launched in 2003, the DSG gearbox was much faster than conventional automatics and because it worked just like a normal manual, it was significantly more fuel efficient than a conventional automatic with a torque converter.

Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT)

The conventional automatic with torque converters, CVTs and single-clutch autos have been around for years - all had their advantages and disadvantages. The conventional auto was smooth but slow to react and thirsty; the CVT was efficient but relied on the belt or other torque transmission scheme and the single-clutch automated manual was jerky and unresponsive. By the way, dual-clutch transmissions can also be more jerky than conventional units. ;-)

A modernized version of conventional automatics - like BMW ZF's 8-speed and Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic - shift just as well as twin-clutch units. Audi removed their S-Tronic from the S4 and S5 series while Ford went back to a conventional auto with the 2015 Focus, after thousands of prior faulty issues. The shift is mainly because of “torque issue” and the “perfect blend between dynamics, efficiency and comfort”. As for Peugeot, they believe in the Aisin EAT6 (Efficient Automatic Transmission 6) which is actually a conventional automatic with double planetary gear set. Meanwhile in our ‘Bolehland’, ProTronic was introduced in the Proton Suprima S, which is a 7-speed Manumatic CVT Transmission.

“How do I get a smooth shifting while prolonging my transmission’s life?” you might ask. The answer is: get X1R’s Automatic Transmission Treatment and enjoy a better driving experience!
