One automotive ad for the Super Bowl has been getting a lot of attention, including that of our Automologist, MAC...

Frankly, I have never seen what all the fuss is about with the Super Bowl, the season-ending American Football event that I have managed to miss for the past fifty years or so. The half-time show leaves me cold as well, except when there is a wardrobe malfunction that is. But the adverts that are produced for the event seem to capture my attention and I do so wait for them.

This year, I feel compelled to highlight one of them, namely the Kia Niro advert that stars Melissa McCarthy (most recently of Ghostbusters fame). McCarthy takes on the challenge of saving whales and trees and the polar ice cap, all to the soundtrack of the Bonnie Tyler hit “Holding Out for a Hero” with the final tagline of “It’s hard to be an eco-warrior, but now you can drive like one”.

Following on from the main ad is a series of shorter offerings that showcase various features of the Kia Niro.

The adverts are obviously intended to be a lighthearted way to showcase the Niro and make use of McCarthy’s slapstick abilities to the full. However, across the internet, the hemp-trouser-wearing brigade seems to be taking an exception to being portrayed in such a manner and Kia has started to get some flack for the adverts. So, in a way, Kia has scored a touchdown with these adverts as, after all, they have got a lot of us to share them.

I think they are fun, but have a look and make up your own mind:
