There was a time when cars would end up in the junkyard long before the odometre reaches the six-figure mark. In fact, cars from the sixties and seventies had odometres which clocked up to 99,999 miles only before reverting to all zeros, and continuing to drive one that had already surpassed 100,000 miles was an accident waiting to happen.

Nowadays, however, with improvements in powertrain design, maintenance and prevention technology and advancement in lubricants, almost all cars can easily reach that mark and then some if it gets the proper care. The average lifespan of cars on the road in 2015 was more than 11 years, which is much improved from 1995, when the average age of cars on the road was just eight years.

Consumer Reports found that owners of cars that could reach the 200,000-mile milestone would benefit from savings of at least US$30,000. It is no longer unusual for cars to reach that mark; in fact, there is a 200,000-mile car club called Allpar and they have more than 4,800 members! And we have heard of exceptions, with some cars making it to 1 million miles, like the 1966 Volvo P1800 owned by Irv Gordon.

Cars that last longer, however, did not make it without some effort. The owners of those cars know how and what is needed to keep their cars in tip-top condition and revving for longer than ever before:

1) Not Sticking to the Schedule

The owner manual lists out when to send your car in for servicing and what is required – from oil and filter change to tyre rotation. Missing even one oil change can increase engine wear. However, it is important to know that the manufacturer’s recommended service interval is based on normal driving conditions, and those of use who live in congested cities or in hot or cold climates know that driving conditions are hardly normal; so, the service intervals should rightly be shorter than recommended. If you are a city driver, you should learn to check your oil every week and get it changed when necessary.

2) Don’t be Penny Wise, Pound Foolish

Spending on good quality parts, fluids and additives will save you money in the long run – preventative measures are always cheaper than damage repairs.

3) Keep it Clean

Most owners keep the car exterior clean but neglect the interior. In stop-start driving common in city driving, the oil depletes a lot faster and it is likely for sludge to develop inside the engine, very much like plaque build-up in arteries, which soon enough leads to the DEATH of the engine. Okay, so we exaggerate. You can send the engine in for cleaning and repair but also be slapped with a five-figure bill after.

Luckily, our sponsor over at X-1R has created the elixir of youth that will extend the life of cars, and have it running like new for much longer. X-1R Engine Treatment is a product so miraculous that it reduces friction in the engine by up to 90%; it extends the life of your oil, thus preventing sludge, protects the engine from dirt and deposits, and improves fuel efficiency.
