The famous comedian and avid car collector is parting with a fraction of his collection, and our Automologist MAC picks his favourite of the lot.
Porsche and sitcom fans will come together on 10th March at Amelia Island, Florida when comedian Jerry Seinfield will auction off 18 classic cars, most of which are Porsche’s and some are of very notable heritage.
Jerry and his 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder. |
Possibly the highlight for most will be the 1973 vintage 917/30 Can-Am Spyder which could be worth up to US$7 million, according to the auction company Gooding and Co. In terms of ageless beauty and not white-knuckle performance, my favourite though would definitely be the 550 Spyder (pictured above) dating from 1955. With only 10,500 miles on the odometer and only three previous owners, you would be buying a virtually brand new car and I have to ask why would you own such a thing of beauty and never use it?

A little more up to date is a 962C which took podium places in the 1990 World Sportscar series with Joest Racing, an example that could be worth as much as US$2 million according, again, to Gooding and Co.
At the bargain basement end of the range - well, everything is relative - is a 911 dating from 1966 that is expected to go for a mere snip at US$200,000. Of course, Porsche's are not everyone’s cup of tea so there are some other classy rides on offer. My pick of the bunch is a VW camper van from 1964 that should fetch in the region of US$80,000.
Jerry sure has good taste in rides.
