The iWatch controls cars too!

Not quite sure if you locked your car? Now you don’t have to trudge all the way back to your car to make sure. Just check your smartphone or, recently available, the iWatch. Isn’t that great?

Even when the much-hyped wearable tech by Apple was still in development, carmakers were simultaneously developing dedicated iWatch apps to enable long-distance control of certain car features. For instance, checking of battery status, locked (or unlocked) doors, and the temperature inside the car.

Luxury marques like BMW and Porsche are amongst the automakers leading the charge. The BMW i Remote is available for its i series, ie. the BMW i3 all-electric city car and the BMW i8 hybrid sports car. Porsche has something called the Car Connect app, which offers more or less the same functions: users can review driving data, battery status for hybrid vehicles, and whether the doors, windows and roof are closed and locked; the horn, headlights and climate control can also be accessed remotely. These features are also available on the Android and iOS platforms, of course.

Another automaker always on the cutting edge of technology, Tesla, is definitely not sitting on its laurels. The Tesla app for the iWatch is still in the testing phase, but is believed will allow users, amongst other functions, to change climate settings and turn the headlights on and off.
