The Mercedes team cruised effortlessly into a fourth straight 1-2 win at the Spanish Grand Prix last Sunday, following an equally smooth qualifying that placed Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at the start of the grid.
Hamilton’s fourth win brings him to the lead in the driver’s championship with 100 points, surpassing Rosberg who has 97 points.
Meanwhile, the duo are also racking up points for Mercedes, which now lead with 197 points in the constructors' championship, while Red Bull, who has won the title since 2010, is in second place with 84.
"I would still say Red Bull is the benchmark at the moment but we're definitely shaking their chair,” Rosberg commented “... and I think there's the possibility that soon we will be the absolute best team. In terms of team organisation, capabilities, we're getting there and hopefully it will be a long domination."
Rosberg admitted that his weak start during the races has allowed his teammate to keep winning, which if remedied could give him the lead again. To think that Hamilton only joined Mercedes last season. When he made the switch, Mercedes had only had one win in three seasons. Hamilton said then, “The team I'm joining isn't yet performing well. But I hope I'll be able to help them get where they want to be.”
Even rival Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso believes that the pair could win every race of this season, adding, “Probably the championship will be decided by who finishes most races between them."
There are still fourteen more races to go, however, and the last time a team had dominated the races was in 2004 when Ferrari won all but two of the 17 races. Perhaps the time that a team had come closest to winning all the races was in 1988 when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost of McLaren fell short by only one victory out of the 16 races.
