SpaceX’s rocket, the Falcon Heavy.

It’s one thing to send a rocket into space; it's another to send a car into space. When SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, tweeted that he would be sending his cherry red Tesla Roadster into orbit around Mars, many thought it was a joke by the eccentric billionaire. But SpaceX has confirmed its CEO has plans to attach his roadster to the company’s Falcon Heavy rocket. It is rumoured that this will happen in January 2018 when Falcon Heavy takes off on its maiden voyage.

Flacon Heavy is said to be the “world’s most powerful rocket” and is designed to carry crew and supplies to deep space destinations, such as the Moon and Mars, one day. The Falcon Heavy is essentially three Falcon 9 rocket bolted together and has 27 engines in totality.

It can propel 54 metric tons—the same as a fully loaded Boeing 737—into orbit, twice the load of Delta IV Heavy which was launched last year and is currently the biggest rocket in operation.

Phil Plait, an astronomer and blogger, contacted Musk, who clarified that the rocket will enter "an orbit around the Sun that takes it as close to the Sun as Earth and as far out as Mars."

We’ll leave you with a quote of why Elon Musk does what he does: “The first step is to establish that something is possible; then probability will occur.”
