Years ago, we didn’t have as many options as we have today for MPVs, SUVs and crossovers. I remember decades ago, our family “MPV” was the Ford Spectron. It was big and robust. My parents, siblings and I were able to take long journeys in relative comfort. It could take a whole football team too—I know, because I transported my footy mates after a game and there were 17 of us! In fact, it was the first time I drove a stick shift.

These days, we have a plethora of choices—Toyota’s Alphard, Vellfire and Estima, Mercedes-Benz’s V-Class, Hyundai’s Starex, and many others. Well, over the weekend, I drove the Maxus G10. Brought into Malaysia by the Westar Group, this vehicle is one of THE luxury MPV models that you may want to have look at.

The Maxus G10 SE was launched in the middle of this year and received rave reviews. In the showroom along Jalan Tun Razak, however, I got a feel of the G10 Executive unit.

Interior fascia is clean and well thought of.

What took me by surprise actually was the price. At RM185,888.00 (OTR price, with insurance and inclusive of 6% GST), you get a 7-seater vehicle with leather upholstery, 10-way pilot seats that can soothe you with a massage, keyless entry with push start button, 360-degree camera, sliding power doors, power boot, 15” high resolution smart interactive touch screen and a host of other luxuries; it is truly value for money.

The unit is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol turbocharged engine with direct injection. It produces 225hp and 345Nm of torque respectively; it was certainly responsive when I floored the throttle. Being mated to a ZF-sourced six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, it sure does help pull the weight of this more than 2-tonne people mover.

10-way pilot seats with massage…who wants a ride?

By having a commanding view, you will surely anticipate the traffic ahead. Driver assistance systems include a detailed parking assistance system along with a 360-degree panorama video coverage. This will help eliminate blind spots for additional safety and improved driving confidence. With a smart lane switching reminder function and 18” alloy wheels supplemented with tyre pressure monitoring system, how’s that for peace of mind?

It comes with a sun roof in the first row followed by twin moon roofs at the second and third rowMaxus wants everyone to be able to look at the stars at night. It comes with a 2-2-4 seating configuration and the seats in the second row were the killer for me. I think I might have dozed off for a while. My children, however, were ecstatic because it was like a moving play land. Child seats with ISOFIX points are a given and your ‘lil ones can catch their favourite toon on the 15” ceiling mounted touchscreen.

Ample space for the family.

With dual airbags and ABS/EBD, it meets the European MPV passive safety standards. And having won the “Luxury MPV of the Year” at the dsf.my VOTY Awards, it only cements its place as a classy MPV.

The Maxus G10 is definitely a well-rounded MPV and worth every cent without burning a hole in your pocket. To top it off, it comes with a 3-year warranty plus 1-year free service. I suggest you go for a test drive and find out for yourself.

Oh blimey! These power doors are nice.
