Tattoos, that it.

Proton introduced the first of its Design Series, the Limited Edition Iriz, at the Malaysia Autoshow 2016, which is taking place from 10 to 13 November. Basically, the Limited Editions are the existing 1.3 Standard CVT and 1.3 Executive CVT variants, embellished with two types of decals, which Proton describes, without aggrandizement, as Honeycomb and The Stripe (on the Proton website, they are described as Geo Rhythm and Urban Stripe…we much prefer the straightforward descriptors used in the press release).

Proton claims that these “sporty limited edition design series are a treat from Proton to its customers seeking exclusivity embodying youthfulness, modernity and progressive lifestyle.”

Only 2,000 units of Iriz’s will have these additional specs of “youthfulness, modernity and progressive lifestyle” thrown in at no extra cost, as prices are the same as the standard variants, from RM44,450 to RM49,130. So, if you’ve had your eye on the Iriz and like the decals, go for it. But besides the aesthetic add-ons, the rest of the car is pretty much the same as the non-limited-edition counterparts. It’s like getting tattoos…you can add new ink on the skin, but the person remains unchanged.

The Iriz’s has been getting plenty of publicity recently, what with the Prime Minister, Najib Razak, encouraging low-income earners to become Uber drivers, and stating during the 2017 Budget announcement that they could use the annual financial aid, BR1M, as downpayment for the Iriz, with a RM4,000 rebate.

So, while these limited edition Iriz’s aren’t all that exciting, we’re looking forward to news of the all-electric Iriz, expected to go into production end of this year (aren’t we there already?). The Malaysian government is attempting to “electrify” the public roads, aiming to have 100,000 electric cars adopted by 2020, and we’re betting that the bulk of it will be Iriz’s.
