Automologist MAC approves of where Aston Martin is heading...and the British marque's all-new DB11 is leading the way.

Just a few days ago, a brand new era commenced for Aston Martin when the all-new DB11 rolled off the end of the production line in Gaydon, UK. Taking up the baton from the much-loved DB9, the DB11 is the first of seven new Aston Martins that will go into production over the next seven years, including the new DBX Crossover vehicle, the first ever in the history of Aston Martin.

The scene at Gaydon, UK, 29 September 2016.
So far, the critics, including us over at Automology, have all loved the latest offering from Aston Martin, a fact that has certainly been reflected in the order book. To date, more than 3,000 units of the hand-built beauty have been ordered, with the first deliveries scheduled to find new homes with some very lucky motorists by mid-October.

The first 1,000 units will have something that no other Astons has ever had before, apparently, after Andy Palmer, Aston Martin's CEO, volunteered to personally QC them. The QC checklist is allegedly the most exhaustive and complete of any Aston Quality Assurance check to date, with, in the company’s own words, absolutely everything checked, including making sure that the car makes the right noise.

Andy Palmer waits to get his hands dirty.
The DB11 is the first to move away from the normal six-litre naturally aspirated engine in favour of a 5.2-litre twin turbo V12, and will employ Daimler’s new electrical architecture to run everything, from the suspension to the Sat Nav and I assume the radio as well, which will be a Bang and Olufsen, of course.

A swath of driver aids will come as standard, largely thanks to the Daimler system, and will include 360-degree parking sensors along with parallel and reverse parking assist, and torque vectoring for increased handling performance. All of these and we have the assurance that the new format will not detract from the normal Aston Martin feel and noise, both of which the company has taken great pains to retain. For all of this amazing-ness, the price will start at a mere GBP154,900 in the UK before you start adding to the specs, which leaves me with just the one question - just how will I explain to my sons that I have spent their college fund on something far more worthwhile.
