Youtuber, TurboFoz, knows he is lucky to be alive. A year ago, his car – with him in it - plummeted down the edge of a cliff.
He was cruising along a highway in Southern California in his 2004 Subaru Forester XT on 4 January 2015. While going through a tunnel, he liked how his car’s exhaust sounded, so he stepped on the pedal. Upon exiting the tunnel, he was momentarily blinded and couldn’t tell what a gesturing bystander was trying to communicate to him.
It was too late when he realised it was about a curve right up ahead. He hit the brakes, but the vehicle lost traction and flew over the berm and over the edge. All we see and hear from his dashcam footage is the rocky cliffside and then sky as the car flipped, and the driver’s terrified screams of “Oh no! Oh no!”
“I was confident I was going to land upside down and get crushed. I was on the world's worst roller coaster that could only end with death…” he wrote later.
Luckily, the Forester came to rest on a rock wall, which was part of a drainage system. If the car had gone over a few feet before or after, it would have ended at the bottom of the hill.
TurboFoz released the video exactly a year after the incident, to educate others on safe driving: “This is a reminder to be safe, pay attention and KNOW THE ROAD before you try to enjoy it. I failed on all 3 of those accounts and it nearly cost me my life.”
We shudder a little watching the video, knowing that that could very well happen to us. And most people would not be so lucky to have a bit of drain sticking out to save us from certain death.
