Top 10 Best Selling Cars in the UK for 2015 (so far)

Forget all the doom and gloom about car sales that are coming out of so many places around the world - car dealers in the UK have never had it so good. Figures just released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reveal that a total of 178,420 new cars were registered in July of 2015, an increase of 3.2% compared with the same period of last year. The results mark an astounding 41 consecutive months of growth for new car sales in the UK and sales for the year have topped the 1.5 million mark, which is a 6.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

So, what has been selling? Who are the stars of this steadily growing market? Read on as we countdown the top ten fave drives of the discerning Brit motorists.

In at number Ten – The Fiat 500 

Sales YTD of 25,916 make the diminutive Italian classic the tenth fave drive of the year thus far. It is an easy car to live with if you are a town-based driver and those retro stylish looks makes its odd driving position and bouncy drive so much easier to forgive.

And at number Nine – The Mercedes-Benz C-class 

Sales YTD of 27,544 put probably the largest offering on the list into ninth position on our list. Seen as a very capable alternative to the BMW 3-Series, even though it lacks cabin space and storage ability, the C-Class has become a firm favourite of the traveling salesman in the UK.

Following on at number Eight – The Audi A3 

Sales YTD of 29,496 has seen the Audi A3 speed past the C-class in this year’s sales. The A3 is simply more versatile than the C-class and easier to live with, if you have a family particularly, and the low cost of maintaining has attracted many new owners this year.

Powering itself to number Seven – The VW Polo 

Sales YTD of 32,600 for the Polo is proof that good things can come in small packages. VW has tried to create a manifestation of the POLO for all walks of life, and the range has everything from the mundane to the distinctly hairy-chested. Still, perhaps not as good as the Ford Fiesta for outright driving fun.

In at number Six – The Vauxhall Astra

 

Sales YTD of 33,153 see the company car choice of so many putting a smile onto the faces of oh-so many drivers as they ply the UK motorways. Vauxhall is not a known brand in Asia; it is in fact GM’s British brand and is distinctly related to Opel in Germany and, of course, Holden in Australia.

And at number Five – The Nissan Qashqai

With YTD Sales of 38,290, this is perhaps surprisingly the only Japanese offering to make the UK Hit Parade. But then, it was designed in Nissan Design Europe, which is in London, and it is built in Sunderland in the North East of the UK where more than two million have been produced since they started the production line in 2006. The Qashqai has a firm reputation for being as fun as a VW Golf, with a greater amount of practicality whilst holding its value well.

Zipping in to number Four – The VW Golf

Sales YTD of 43,141 make the evergreen Golf still a firm fave drive in the UK. The 1.6-litre version has become a firm favourite as a company car whilst the 1.4-litre variant seems to be more the choice of the urban family. Of course there is still the mad Golf GTi and the completely barmy R400…need we say anymore?

Entertaining us at number Three – The Ford Focus

With Sales YTD of 52,122, the Ford Focus is the best driver enjoyment car in its class, managing to perfectly match driveability with outright family suitability. For most, it is simply the one to have. Available in a range of variants, the Focus has set the standards for family driving fun for decades now.

Stealing Second spot – The Vauxhall Corsa 

Sales YTD of 55,011 see the Vauxhall Corsa sneak into second place. The diminutive offering from Zaragoza Spain is GM’s second entry into the UK Hit Parade. First launched all the way back in September of 1982, the Corsa has been steadily updated to keep its position as one of UK’s best selling cars.

And at number One – The Ford Fiesta 

With sales YTD of 80,494 the Fiesta is the winner by a country mile. Adept at both town driving, where the nippy little Fiesta excels, to bumpy out-of-town driving, where the Fiesta is more than capable of soaking up the punishment better than most of its rivals. It is in fact so far ahead, it does make you wonder what Ford will do next.
