So the official announcement is out. UK radio DJ and sometimes game show host, Chris Evans, has announced that he was thrilled to be taking the popular BBC show into the future, after the exit of Jeremy Clarkson due to a fracas with one of the producers.

49-year-old Chris has signed a three-year contract with Top Gear and is said to be ready to front a new look and version of the show that will include three brand new presenters, after both Richard Hammond and James May were also dropped from the show.

In a statement, Chris Evans announced: “I’m thrilled. Top Gear is my favourite programme of all time. Created by a host of brilliant minds who love cars and understand how to make the massively complicated come across as fun, devil-may-care and effortless. When in fact of course, it’s anything but and that’s the genius of Top Gear’s global success. I promise I will do everything I possibly can to respect what has gone on before and take the show forward.”

Despite vowing to honour the past history of Top Gear, most fans did not seem to believe that Evans can indeed fill Clarkson’s Shoes.

One fan wrote: “Three-year contract for Evans. The BBC are overly optimistic with Evans. It won’t last a year.” Another wrote: "Oh, dear. Can't stand Chris Evans. Won't be happy until he is presenting every programme on the BBC. DIY SOS next."

"Chris Evans, really I may not care for him too much but what sort of replacement is that for Clarkson. I won't be watching anymore #TopGear," said another.

One posted: "Never watching @BBC_TopGear again. Chris Evans is a w*****. Impossible to like him. #BringClarksonBack."

Evans said he had already spoken to people who could host the show with him, adding that he had started work on the programme. Former model Jodie Kidd, who presents Channel 5's Classic Car Show, has already been tipped for a role. Formula One presenter, Suzi Perry, has also been rumoured for the show; she appeared prominently in the audience of Evans' TV show, TFI Friday, last week, shortly after he agreed to front Top Gear.
