Senna flies in Monaco pile-up

After six different winners in the first six races in the inaugural Formula E series, Sebastian Buemi ended the run of unrepeated winners when he was the first to cross the finish line in the Monaco ePrix last weekend.

Buemi’s previous win for e.dams was at the Punta del Este race in Uruguay. He was also the first driver to have started from pole position and ended with a victory. Buemi finished the race with a wide 2.1-second gap from second place winner, Lucas di Grassi.

The race started with two crashes on lap one. Jean-Eric Vergne collided with his Andretti Autosport teammate, Scott Speed, as they approached the very first corner. Then, cornering at Sainte Devote, Daniel Abt turned wide and hit the wall as he was exiting, causing Bruno Senna to launch up from the rear of Abt’s car and temporarily going airborne. The safety car was deployed for four laps while many cars had to pit for bodywork repairs. Watch Senna take to the sky:

The race continued and current points leader, di Grassi, pitted to change cars on lap 24. Buemi was amongst the last few to changes cars two laps later; he rejoined the race ahead of di Grassi, who attempted to take advantage of the cold brakes on the Swiss' car at the hairpin leading into the circuit’s harbour-side chicane. But Buemi held the inside line; from then, the race was his to win.

Nelson Piquet Jr, who is currently in second place in the drivers’ standing, used his fan boost to pass Jerome D’Ambrosio on lap five. He then conserved his battery until the last, pitting on lap 26 for the car with a fresh charge. On lap 42, he tried to overtake his fellow countryman, di Grassi, at the hairpin but fell back after a successful defense was executed. Piquet rounded up the podium in third.
