It’s only the third race of the current Formula One season, but it is already an exciting one. Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing secured his first win since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last year, and placed sixth overall while leaving the race for the driver’s championship wide open.
Ricciardo made the most of the safety car period when he dove in for fresh tyres and overtook five cars to win the race. As he is out of a contract after this year, this was an invitation to Ferrari and Mercedes—both potentially have seats open next season—to remind them of his talent.
“This sport’s crazy,” Ricciardo said. “A week ago I was with my head down. Frustrated at the sport, frustrated at all the variables. Sometimes I question why I chose this sport because there’s so many things out of your control and it does get you down a lot – but then when you have a day like this it’s worth fifty of those bad ones.”
It is the first time Aston Martin, who is the title sponsor for Red Bull, has its name on the winner’s step of a Formula 1 race. Massive branding for them.
The first half of the race seemed as though Sebastian Vettel was destined to trot to his third win of the season, only for Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly to crash into teammate Brendon Hartley on lap 30, and with all the debris strewn across track, the safety car was called into action.
The Red Bull team immediately called in their cars and fitted them with soft tyres. It would prove decisive as the pace advantage over the Ferrari and Mercedes became clear.

Valtteri Bottas, who was leading the race for a certain period and chasing his fourth win in his career, settled for second after being picked out on lap 45 by Ricciardo.
2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen secured another third place finish after his podium in Australia in the opening round.
Reigning world champion, Lewis Hamilton, nursed his car to a disappointing fourth, but will be glad that he has narrowed the gap in the title battle from 17 to nine points.
Max Verstappen was also in the running for a win, but didn’t fail to have another race-incident when he ran off the road in attempting to pass Hamilton and later on lap 43, collided with Vettel and gained a 10-second penalty. He finished fifth.
Niko Hulkenberg of Renault came in sixth while Fernando Alonso of McLaren Honda, who passed Vettel with two laps to go, settled for seventh.
Championship leader Vettel will be utterly disappaointed with his eight-place finish after winning the last two rounds. Carlos Sainz Jr, Renault and Kevin Magnussen of Haas finished ninth and tenth respectively.
