Nissan is taking driverless technology to a new level as it reveals that it has had success with vehicle-control by interpreting signals from the driver's brain. The automaker calls this technology Brain-to-Vehicle, or B2V, and it claims that this will speed up reaction times so vehicles can continually adapt, making driving more enjoyable than it already is.
"When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines," said Nissan's executive vice-president Daniele Schillaci.
"Yet B2V technology does the opposite, by using signals from their own brain to make the drive even more exciting and enjoyable. Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, we are moving people to a better world by delivering more autonomy, more electrification and more connectivity," he continued.
Even though driverless technology has been in development for some time, this is the first system of its kind and a complete detour from what other manufacturers are doing. The driver wears a device capable of detecting brain activity, which can be analysed by autonomous drive systems. By anticipating movement, the on-board system will be able to take the necessary action, like turning the wheel or slowing the car 0.2 to 0.5 seconds quicker than a driver can do manually.
Now, this is simply fascinating. Imagine the car going where we want it to go just by thinking it. Use the Force...
