Stunning Ford Mustang Bullit 2018 at Detroit Auto Show

When it comes to car movies, Bullit has one of the best car chase scenes of all time. The hair-raising stunts through the streets of San Francisco remain as exciting as ever. That 10-minute car chase took four weeks to shoot and of course the cars were not regular cars you could find in showrooms at the time. The cars had to be faster and be able to take tremendous beating. Heavy-duty parts were installed, with skid plates to protect the undercarriage and special over-inflated tyres.

This year at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford revealed a new special edition Mustang to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film. The original car used in the film was also displayed after it was kept out of sight for more than four decades.

Following the theme of its predecessor, the sleek new Mustang is given a characteristic Dark Highland Green paintjob, but will also be available in Shadow Black. Its mill has been cranked up to a 5.0-litre V8, which will give you 475 ponies and a spine-tingling 569Nm of torque.

Complementing its bold appearance, you get an active exhaust (valves for noise!), an ‘Open Air’ induction system and GT350 intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies.

“This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “As a designer, it’s my favorite Mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything – it’s just cool.”

The incredibly cool lady is Molly McQueen, grand-daughter of legendary actor Steve McQueen, who starred in the film.



Its top speed of 163mph is faster than the latest Mustang GT by 8mph. Its 19-inch aluminium wheels with red Brembo brakes, subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows definitely brings out the muscle in this car.



Interior-wise, leather is prevalent. A 12-inch digital LCD instrument cluster greets you. There’s green accents in the stitching on the dash, door panels and centre console. And since it’s a special car, you get a manual gearbox with a white cue ball gear knob, paying homage to the original. Nice!

You can upgrade to different options, which includes an electronics pack with better audio, memory seats, navigation, blind-spot info, MagneRide semi-active suspension and Recaro black leather seats.

Proceeds from the first version of the car will go to the Boys Republic school in California, which Steve McQueen attended. 

“When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. “It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass.”

This is one supercool badass car!
