There is a standard E-Class All-Terrain that’s about to be launched, so why did Mercedes come up with another car for enraged soccer mums? Well, that’s what happens when engineers get bored. They come up with some seriously interesting designs or seriously pointless concepts.
This Mercedes E-Class is not like the others; it is a battlewagon that looks insane, with its crazy wide body and more ground clearance than a Toyota Hilux. It is actually an off-roading luxury wagon called the E-Class All-Terrain 4x4², which is sort of like a Hilux on luxury drugs. What a cool way to scare the hell out of everyone else on the road.
The engineers who built this tank borrowed the portal axles from the G-Wagon’s 4x4² to give the car some better off-road capabilities.
With the axles fitted under the body, the All-Terrain 4x4²’s ground clearance is up to a ludicrous 16.5 inches, which is 150% more ground clearance than a Land Rover. It will easily wade through deep water better than any other off-roader. To accommodate the larger off-road wheels and tires, carbon fibre wheel arch extensions had to be added. Being insanely 7.8 inches wider than before, it's probably not going to fit in a traditional parking space, but with this beast, any part of this world could be its parking space.
The heart of this beast is a 3.5-liter V6 spewing out 333 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Don’t know if that’s going to be enough, but we’ll have to wait and see.
This is actually a six-month pet project and it is utterly insane; moreover, rumour has it that Mercedes may actually consider a very small run of this vehicle. We could very possibly be seeing a couple of soccer mums trying to terrify every other mums at soccer practice and this would be the battlewagon they would be in.
