It still hasn’t been launched yet, but the next generation M5, or to be more precise the M550i X Drive, is rumoured to have a super ludicrous button all of its own, with a 0 to 100 kph time of 3.5 seconds, according to BMWBlog that is. This will make it not so much of a sport sedan but much more a sports rocket.
The blog has given away a few details and claims that the absurd acceleration will come from a 600bhp V8 with twin turbos mated to a dual clutch gearbox. Like so many of the recent offerings from Germany, such as the Mercedes AMG E63, this incarnation of the famed M5 is set to have an all-wheel-drive system to keep the power even when you are accelerating. But unlike other offerings from BMW, you will have an option to disengage the front wheels and thus fulfill your inner desire to drift a bit.
These ‘silly’ acceleration numbers seem to be all the fashion these days, with the AMG E63 claiming 6.3 seconds and the Cadillac CTS-V claiming a 3.7 seconds time. Of course, I for one love the builders for making cars that will have the hemp-trouser-wearing section of the general public gnashing and wailing as they eat their boiled tofu. But secretly we do wonder how or when you would get to use the raw power on tap.
Apparently the changes are more under the skin; the look of the new M5 is very similar to the outgoing model. Lightweight construction is the name of the game but as of yet, confirmed details are hard to come by. Automology, of course, will bring you more details once we get them. For now, our advice is to park your Tesla and get a real sports sedan. That’s all we have to say about that.
