Jaguar will be making its official return to motorports by making a late entry into the 2016 FIA Formula E Championship with its own team. The British automaker is developing its own EV powertrains and battery technology, and participation in the only international all-electric single-seater championship will give it a leg up.

The Group Engineering Director for Jaguar, Nick Rogers said, “Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover's future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies.”

Jaguar’s return to global motorsports using Formula E as its reentry is a major endorsement for the championship. The brand has a rich sporting heritage and will bring with it an influx of motorsports fans.

Whispers around the grapevine is that Jaguar is currently building an electric crossover with a 300-mile range, which will stand alone in the company’s product range. It will be the first Jaguar Land Rover’s all-electric model that will lead to other electric spawns.
