Chevy goes Sci-Fi

Introduced at the auto show in Shanghai this week, the Chevy's self-driving FNR concept has defied our wildest imagination. We’d take this over the Mercedes' F 015 self-driving car, which now looks like an old clunker next to the Chevy’s pod-like design swathed in crystal laser lights inside and out, and doors that unfold like dragonfly wings. If the next-gen Volt slept with a BMW i8, this would be what their descendents would look like 50 years from now.

The inside is just as jaw-dropping as the outside. The Chevy touts magnetic hubless wheel electric motors, uses wireless charging and eye recognition to verify the driver, and has swiveling front seats that can read the driver’s heart rate and blood pressure, and adjust temperature, speed and lighting accordingly.

This over-the-top concept car, even more than other concept cars, will probably never make it to production, but we'd like to see some aspects of the FNR trickle down to more attainable vehicles. The aerodynamic and dramatic curves, for instance. The shape of the traditional sedan has not altered much over the years. Consider the 2016 BMW 7 Series that comes out this year; it is the sedan of all sedans, but with the same lines typical of a car of its type. We don’t foresee that its future successors will be any different in this aspect. So, why not take a leaf out of the Chevy FNR’s book?
