There are 7 colours in the rainbow
and infinite hues in between, but most people just prefer black or white
when it comes to their cars.
Forbes
reported that for a second consecutive year, the most popular car
colour is white. The report is based on the 2012 DuPont Automotive
Colour Popularity Report. The other colours that made Top 5 are black,
silver, gray and red.
Nancy
Lockhart, DuPont Colour Marketing Manager, said, “White especially has
been a constant top runner since really 1998. Silver had its reign from
2001 to 2006 as being the leading and now black has come up as being the
leading colour in certain segments, especially luxury.”
Lockhart says that car buyers find black and white appealing as they denote status, luxury and quality.
Car colours have been influenced by
the electronics industry over the past 10 years. From the early to mid
2000s, mobile phones, computers and home entertainment systems were
gilded in silver. So, cars followed suit. Lockhart attributes the trend to silver
representing the idea of modern technology.
Subsequently,
Apple came up with their line of white iBooks, iMacs, iPhones and
iPods. Suddenly, white became a hip colour. The copycat car industry
also began inclining towards white.
Even
home decor began influencing automakers. At one point, browns and
beiges were popular. Lately, people are favouring green and it ranks
ninth in popularity.
Still, white, silver, grey and black vehicles continue to dominate, all over the world. They make up 76% of the automotive market. This may change in the future. If Nicki Minaj and Paris Hilton have any influence over public tastes, then we'll soon see a lot of pink rides on the road. |
