The legendary Ford Mustang is number one in the world again. With its iconic status cemented decades ago, the sixth-generation Mustang sold a total of 125,809 units worldwide. As the iconic pony car celebrates its 54th birthday today, 17th April, National Mustang Day, having this sales number anchors it at the top spot for the third year running.

81,866 units were sold in the United States alone. In Ford’s fastest growing market, China, 7,125 registrations were reported. Among the variants, the 5.0-litre V8 Ford Mustang GT was the most popular.

“The world is falling in love with Mustang,” says Ford Sales Analyst, Erich Merkle. “Mustang represents the best of American design, performance and freedom, with an unmistakable personality that appeals – regardless of your post code.”

For 2018, the engine has been given a thorough reworking, gaining direct injection in addition to its existing port-injection system. That’s contributed to a 25-horsepower bump, from 435 horsepower to 460.

Even though traditional sports car purchases tend to skew towards males, an increasing number of women are buying them. Ford states that there’s been about a ten-percent increase in women buying Mustangs.

The original Ford Mustang first debuted at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York in 1964, and it is the car that gave birth to the pony car class.

Ford created a special video commemorating Mustang Day. Enjoy!

Here’s to another 54 years.
